Emerge Wisconsin Alumnae Stepping Up to Run For Office
Emerge Wisconsin Alumnae Stepping Up to Run For Office
Madison – Twenty-two percent. That’s the percentage of women serving in the Wisconsin State Legislature.
Why aren’t more women serving in public office? One Wisconsin non-profit believes it's because women, more so than men, need to be invited to run, and to feel confident that they have the skills they'll need before committing to a campaign. That’s where Emerge Wisconsin steps in.
Too often, women do not see themselves running for office - they don't think they are experienced enough or they just don't know where to start. Emerge Wisconsin is changing that, as evidenced by the number of our alumnae running this year:
Carol Beals, Class of 2010 – State Senate – District 17
Penny Bernard Schaber, Class of 2007 – State Assembly – District 57
Dianne Hesselbein, Class of 2009 – State Assembly – District 77
Liz Jones, Class of 2009 – State Assembly – District 29
Chandra Lay, Class of 2010 – Portage County Clerk of Courts
Sarah Ann Shanahan, Class of 2010 – State Assembly – District 50
Lou Ann Weix, Class of 2009 – State Assembly – District 90
JoCasta Zamarrippa, Class of 2010 – State Assembly – District 8
