Emerge Wisconsin Class of 2010

Charisha (pronounced Karisha) is the President/CEO of the organization Mothers of the Struggle whose mission is to organize and train mothers to take direct action to alter the relation of power in their community for the best interest of their families and communities. Charisha has a background working in special education and is also very active in several organizations, such as the NAACP (where she is a lifelong member), Boys and Girls Club, Mothers Against Gun Violence and She-roes to name a few.  Charisha has also run for political office, including Common Council and State Assembly.

Carol works as Deans Assistant at UW Platteville and is an active AFSCME member.  She is also a current County Board Supervisor and Chair of the Grant County Democratic Party.  Carol has also been involved in multiple campaigns, in addition to hers, including Hillary Clinton, President Barack Obama, US Senator Russ Feingold, US Representative Ron Kind and State Representative Phil Garthwaite to name a few.  Carol also serves as Chair and volunteer member of the Board of Directors for Wisconsin Badger Camp, a camp for individuals with developmental disabilities.  Her involvement includes fund raising activities and promoting the work of the camp throughout the state.

Dana is currently Executive Director and Founder of Heartland Farm Sanctuary, Inc., a non-profit organization created to provide care and shelter for abused and neglected farm animals.  In 2009 Dana organized a citizens’ advocacy group to promote passage of the Wisconsin Commercial Dog Breeders Licensure Bill, which addresses the inhumane living conditions commonly found at puppy mills.  In her former career Dana was an actuary at CUNA Mutual Group in Madison, specializing in corporate forecasting and budgeting.  She earned her MBA in Risk Management and Insurance and her Masters Degree in Community Counseling from the University of Wisconsin.

Noelle has 20 years of diverse business experience where she has developed her expertise in leadership, organizational relations, management and fund raising.  She has spent the last 12 years in the nonprofit industry in management and senior management positions.  Most recently, Noelle has also consulted with local nonprofits in the area of fundraising, marketing and organizational development.  Noelle is currently serving on the Board of Directors of The Park People and Vice President of PTO at her children’s school, College Park Elementary School.  Noelle has worked on various political campaigns including Tom Barrett for Mayor. She recently earned her MBA for Alverno College and is currently running for Village Trustee in the Village of Greendale.

Chandra keeps busy as both a Deputy Clerk for Portage County and a Realtor.  She is an active member in the Portage County Democratic Party, Young Professionals of Portage County and as a member of her local AFSCME union.  Chandra has been active in developing a program, “Getting Involved in Local Government: Which Role is Right for You?”

Sarah is the Global Warming Program Associate for Clean Wisconsin and staffs the Global Warming Solutions Working Group of REAMP.  She works on a variety of tasks including research, analysis and organizing work related to global warming solutions.  Her prior experience includes a legislative internship with WISPIRG working on a textbooks campaign, canvassing and running a summer campaign office for the Fund for Public Interest, and various other public mobilizations efforts.  Sarah is a graduate of UW-Madison where she received her Bachelor of Science in Political Science.

ViAnna is a Community Activist for Social Justice, Voter Rights and Civil Liberties.  She works as a Case Manager for the United Methodist Church 2008 Flood Recovery Program.  A retired Army, Iraq War Veteran and graduate of Indiana University, ViAnna has run for common council in Milwaukee and is actively involved in local issues concerning women’s rights. 

Tara is currently serving in her fifth term on the La Crosse County Board of Supervisors where she serves as First Vice Chair.  In 2008, Tara was the Democratic candidate for the 32nd State Senate race.  Prior to entering the local politics, Tara enjoyed a fifteen year career in the United Way movement.  She also maintains her ongoing community activism by serving in various roles with organizations such as Western Wisconsin Cares, La Crosse Public Education Foundation and the Mississippi River Regional Planning Commission.  Tara and her husband, Tim are the parents of a 13 year old son and an 11 year old daughter.

JoCasta (or Joey) is the Community Outreach Coordinator for Planned Parenthood. Having run for local office, JoCasta continues to be passionate about voter engagement and organizing the Latino community to get out and vote. Recently, she was elected co-chair of the Milwaukee Teen Pregnancy Prevention Network (MTPPN), a coalition of community partners coordinated by Milwaukee Brighter Futures.

Ellen is an RN by occupation and training, and is a member of AFSCME.  Since 1993, she has served as a School Board Member for Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District.  Ellen is also involved in other organizations such as Friends of the Middleton Public Library, Friends of Pheasant Branch and Soujourners.  Her political campaign experience includes President Obama, Senator Feingold and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin to name a few. 

Shelle currently works as a Legislative Assistant for State Representative Cory Mason (D - 62nd AD) and is also involved in organizations such as Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, Dunn’s Marsh Neighborhood Association Council and National Organization for Women Madison Chapter.  Shelle also has a union background, as an OPEIU Local #9 member for four years and as an employee of IBEW #715.  She has also participated and completed the following training programs: Wellstone Action! Advanced Campaign Management School and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin Advanced Democratic Leadership Institute. 

Janice works for the City of Kenosha Department of Public Works and is a graduate of the Wisconsin Women in Government Graduate Seminar.  Janice is a life-long Democrat, a member of the Kenosha County Democrats and a member of the steering committee of Leadership Kenosha. 

An attorney in Menasha, Kate is also very active in her community and her professional field, serving on two Wisconsin State Bar Association committees.  She has served as president of the Winnebago County Bar Association, served on the board of Boys and Girls Brigade of Neenah and has also worked in judicial campaigns in Winnebago County. 

Vanessa currently works in the capitol for State Representative Pedro Colón (D – 8th AD).  She is originally from the south side of Chicago.  Vanessa has been involved in various campaigns, including Representative Colon’s re-election campaign and Barack Obama’s campaign for president.  She is also active in the Latino community, including working with immigration rights organization Voces de la Frontera. 

Mary is currently a student at the University of Wisconsin – Madison where she is majoring in Sociology.  She most recently studied abroad in South Africa and has also done work with the Special Olympics, Students for Barack Obama and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. 

LaShawndra is employed by Community Advocates, but is busy in various other volunteer and work activities, including Restorative Justice Collective and Wisconsin Alliance for Women’s Health.  She has also been involved with 9 to 5 Milwaukee and Make It Work! Milwaukee.  LaShawndra also is a professional singer who uses her music to promote the causes she believes in.

After a long and distinguished career as an award-winning newspaper reporter and editor, Anita is now active in community work. She volunteers extensively at a branch of the Madison Public Library, is a member of the Friends of Cherokee Marsh, serves on the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council and has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Northside Planning Council.  Anita has been married 40 years to John Weier.  Her daughter Georgia manages member services for Wisconsin Literacy.
